Review Ubuntu 16.04-Part 4-Xenial Xerus First thoughts and included software

First thoughts:

As always with a fresh Ubuntu install, my first thought is generally "ugh, that's so ugly."

After running through a few "what do do after installing Ubuntu" blog posts, my system is looking MUCH better.

Lookin good!
Included software:

Doesn't seem to be anything crazy here. A few things that are great if you're a beginner

Firefox is the default browser, that's a good place to start if you're an open-source virgin. You can also try Chromium or track down and install Chrome.

Thunderbird is the default email client. Thunderbird is drop-in replacement for what Outlook used to be. It's very easy to set up and use.

Libreoffice: The opensource monster replacement for MS office. People can talk about the areas it falls short of MS office, but it does the job. Besides, with so many people using google drive now, there's options. But Libreoffice is great, I've used it for years in my work.

A few things I use that I've added:

  • Rescuetime client and browser plugin
  • Hamster time tracker and indicator
  • Tomboy notepad
  • Vivaldi (it's not my browser of choice, but I'm finally sitting down and playing with it, initial speed test results I ran were crazy!)
  • Spotify
  • Insync Google drive client, I lucked out and scored a free license on Facebook. But I can resoundingly say that after using it, it's WELL worth the $25 (one-time) cost.  Now if only there were an Amazon drive client for Linux...
