First review! Ubuntu 16.04 -Part 1-Xenial Xerus

Ubuntu, since it's creation, has been a lamp-stand, in a sense, for Linux.
For a long while it was the number one Linux distribution.

It's not anymore of course, since it released the Unity desktop environment and Linux Mint came rushing in to save the horrified masses, it's still up there at the top.

Ubuntu is the brainchild of Mark Shuttleworth, a tech billionaire and Russian space pioneer.

My perception of Ubuntu and Canonical (Ubuntu's parent company) as an organization is really similar to Microsoft.  It seems to me that Shuttleworth's goal is to build Ubuntu into a giant tech company.  However...all they do is chase the trends and seemingly fail at everything they try.

I'm sure I'm missing a few things, but Ubuntu drive, Ubuntu tablets, Ubuntu phones.  And they're still going.  I learned a while ago, that you can't chase trends in IT.  And that's all Canonical seems to want to do.

In regards to Ubuntu the distro?  It's a great distro.  Definitely worth checking out for first-timers or grizzled vets.  I tend to install it fairly regularly because it's a quick install and it always "just works" with my hardware.

What is it based on?

Ubuntu is based on Debian.  Debian is about as old and rock-solid as it gets in the Linux world.

What is it known for? 

What's it known for?!?  Ubuntu (almost) made Linux hip!  Ubuntu (almost) brought the hallowed "Year of the Linux desktop"!  Ubuntu got Dell to have Ubuntu as an option to buy on computers (they still do)!  Ubuntu....was actually on shelves at Best Buy for a while for sale.  Ubuntu, for a while, became Linux and that's huge.  The massive popularity of Ubuntu is also (I'm confident, but can't back this up) the reason that there are so many deb packages available for software.  I think there's a significant amount of Linux support available that simply wouldn't be there if Ubuntu hadn't brought Linux out of the basement and into the real world.

From a more practical perspective, Ubuntu is responsible for the Unity desktop and everything orange.
