Review Linux Mint 18 Sarah First thoughts and included software-Part 4

First thoughts:

It's so pretty....and so polished. And I hate everything about it. Why?

Definitely seems like the easiest transition for a Windows user that I'm aware of. The layout is just so intuitive (from pre-Metro windows).

I've run Mint a few times over the years. I don't think I've ever stuck with it for more than a day or two. There's something about this distro that makes my skin crawl and I've never taken the time to figure out why. I've thought about it for the last day or so and my initial thoughts (get ready, because this sounds beyond stupid) is that it's too polished and works too well.

There, I said it.

Maybe it reminds me too much of a mac for those reasons. It's nothing LIKE a Mac mind you, it's not designed to be a Mac clone. But the level of polish on this thing makes me want to throw up.
Maybe because I like the fact that every distro I try and use, whether the most stable or the most cutting-edge requires troubleshooting SOMETHING, requires customizing SOMETHING. And Mint just looks so...pretty from the first login.
That is definitely not my bag. If I wanted that crap, I'd probably be a Mac use
r.

Having said that, I'm assuming everything I just rambled about is actually a big check in the "Pro" column for most people. So let me go on record...Linux Mint is so polished and attractive that it makes me a little nauseous. You should probably try it.

Post install/post tweaked desktop:

Virtually the same...ugh.

Included software:
Firefox is the included default browser
Thunderbird is the included default email client. Both good choices for a distro that is known for new Linux users.
It also include the full Libreoffice 5 suite, a great replacement for MS office.
Of course, you can add any other browser, email client or office software you want.
All the mint-specific tools are there and VLC is included by default.

It's not overloaded with bloat. That was something that turned me off a few years ago with a lot of distros, but apparently there's been a trend away from that sort of thing. That's one of the reasons I've spent so much time on Arch over the years, so that's great.

As far as post-install stuff. I changed the theme to the dark theme (not perfect but pretty darn good). I installed and set up my usual programs (rescuetime, insync, tomboy, spotify) and so far so good. Zero issues yet.
