Review Fedora 24 Workstation First thoughts and included software-Part 4
I like Fedora, I've always liked Fedora. I've never given much thought as to why I like certain distros and dislike others. Now I'm forced too. Which isn't a bad thing.
Currently, I'm three days into the week with Fedora 24. One of the things I realized while going through the initial setup and configuration is that I am forced to admit, it is definitely more complicated than setting up and configuring a Mint or Ubuntu installation. I'll try to detail that in the installation post. But, unfortunately I think it's different enough and complicated enough to scare new users away, which stinks.
My Canon Pixma MG7120 printer AND scanner works out of the box. That is OUTSTANDING. I haven't found another distro that does that. Yay, for redhat backed, business focused distros!
There doesn't seem to be a tomboy indicator or extension, switched to gnote...nothing for that either....DANG. I really like being able to control my notes from the top menubar instead of having to open the main notes window. That's disappointing. In the grand scheme of things, not a huge deal, but it's a big part of my workflow. The gnome extension doesn't work because it's not updated for gnome 3.20
The default Gnome 3 environment is always pretty sparse. A few extensions from https://extensions.gnome.org will fix that right up. Though, some of my favorite extensions aren't updated for Gnome 3.20 yet.
The cartoony, space themes on Fedora always make me chuckle. Reminds me of Marvin the Martian.
Included software:
Default browser is Firefox, I installed Chrome. For the purposes of these reviews I'm trying to stay with the default applications as much as possible. However, I am so integrated with Chrome that using something else is tougher.
Default email is evolution. I'm running Evolution this week.
Libreoffice is included by default
I'm very surprised by how little software is installed by default. I've noticed that recently and think I read something about a trend towards minimizing default installed software. I approve! One of the things that drove me to Arch was the fact that every distro seemed to come with way too much software and I simply didn't need it. I like a light system when it comes to software. If I don't use it....I don't want it on there. So this is awesome. Fedora has seemingly only the essentials out of the box. However, everything you could possibly want is available in the repos.
